Rolex Rankings No. 10 Stacy Lewis and No. 30 Brittany Lang share the 36-hole lead at 9-under-par at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia. They hold a one-shot lead over Na Yeon Choi and Dewi Claire Schreefel heading into Saturday’s third round.
Lewis shot the low round of the day on Friday, a 5-under 66, which ties the tournament record. Her back-nine also ties for the lowest nine-hole score in the tournament history, which dates back to last year’s inaugural event. Overall on the day, Lewis had eight birdies and one double bogey, which came on No. 9 before she went on her birdie binge on the back nine.
“The front nine, I was hitting good shots, but wasn’t making any putts and made a bad swing on 9 and made double,” Lewis said. “That almost got me more focused and started hitting good golf shots and putts started going in and things started going my way on the back.”
Lang had back-to-back birdies on No. 12 and 13 to move into a tie for the lead before play was halted due to severe weather in the area. Although the two delays halted Lang’s momentum, she was able to par her final five holes to remain tied for the lead after two rounds of play.
“You come out and you always feel different,” Lang said of the delays. “Like I was like a little bit shaky, because you sit for so long, you’re in the air conditioning and you just feel different and then you have to get back to seeing your golf shot. Choi has nine top-10 finishes this year, including two runner-up finishes. One of those came last week when she missed earning her third straight title at the LPGA HanaBank Championship, losing by one shot to Rolex Rankings No. 1 Yani Tseng.
“Everybody has ability to win every week,” Choi said. “I’m just keep going every week, do my best and then I mean, like some people think that it only matters if you win something or get something, but I don’t think so. Like if I don’t win or didn’t win, it doesn’t matter. Just every day I learn something, get something. So just keep doing the same thing every day. “
Look who’s lurking: Among the players currently in the top-10 heading into Saturday’s third round are Rolex Rankings No. 1 Yani Tseng, No. 2 Suzann Pettersen and No. 9 Paula Creamer.
Tseng birdied three straight holes on the back nine and her 4-under round of 67 has moved her into a tie for sixth at 6-under-par. The world’s current No. 1 player i
